FAQ
What is Varithena?
Varithena is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses a medicated foam to eliminate varicose veins. Only local anesthesia is required, and treatment typically takes one hour or less to complete.
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
Once the sclerosant is injected into the blood vessel, the walls of the vein stick together and eventually close down. The veins are then reabsorbed into the body, effectively eliminating the unhealthy veins and leaving only healthy ones. Most patients only need one treatment, but occasionally more than one session is required for extensive varicose/spider veins.
How Does Varithena Work?
The vein doctor will numb the area to be treated and inject a small amount of foam using a catheter. This foam causes the vein to swell and close, allowing blood flow to be re-routed to healthy veins throughout the body.
Is Varithena Painful?
Patients may feel some pressure during the injection, and mild tenderness in their leg after the procedure. This tenderness will dissipate in about a week, and most patients are able to resume normal activity within 24 hours after the procedure is done.
